Invocation of Sage Patanjali
(Sung by Padmashree Padmaja Phenany)
With folded hands, I bow in reverence to the illustrious Sage Patanjali,
who purified the mind through Yoga,
speech through Grammar,
and the body through Medicine.
This timeless tribute, as recorded by King Bhoja in Rajamarttanda (11th century), honors Sage Patanjali’s profound wisdom and his invaluable contributions to three great sciences—Yoga, Grammar, and Ayurveda—which continue to guide humanity on the path of self-improvement and well-being.
Sage Patanjali & the Essence of Yoga
Sage Patanjali, the revered author of the Yoga Sutras, compiled 196 Sanskrit aphorisms that serve as the foundation of classical yoga. These sutras, expressed in a precise and condensed form, provide a structured path to achieving mental clarity, physical discipline, and spiritual liberation.
To help practitioners attain harmony of body, mind, and soul, Patanjali structured Yoga into Eight Limbs (Ashtanga Yoga):
The Eight Limbs of Yoga (Ashtanga Yoga)
1.Yama – Ethical principles (social discipline)
2.Niyama – Self-discipline (personal observances)
3.Asana – Physical postures (stability & strength)
4.Pranayama – Breath control (regulation of life force)
5.Pratyahara – Withdrawal of the senses (detachment from distractions)
6.Dharana – Concentration (focused awareness)
7.Dhyana – Meditation (deep contemplation)
8.Samadhi – Absorption (union with the higher self)
These eight limbs serve as a sacred guide, enabling seekers to attain inner peace, heightened awareness, and spiritual fulfillment. They provide a disciplined approach to achieving success in yoga and self-mastery.
At UshaShyam Yoga Center, we uphold this ancient wisdom and integrate it into our practice, fostering holistic well-being and inner transformation.
